A modern approach to functional orthodontics should preserve the valuable aspects of traditional orthodontics while embracing new perspectives and technologies that can improve patient outcomes. Recent advancements in functional anatomy and bioelectrical systems have expanded our diagnostic capabilities, and we must incorporate these insights into our modern approach to functional treatments. For example, the use of surface electromyography, computerized mandibular scanning, and transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation can enhance treatment planning and produce more accurate and efficient orthodontic treatments.
Additionally, we need to redefine and update the term "functional treatment" to exclude mechanical treatments that are inaccurately labeled as "functional". This means focusing on treatments that improve the patient's overall oral health, function, and aesthetics, rather than solely addressing tooth alignment and mandibular sagittal correction.
By combining the best of traditional orthodontics with the latest technological advancements and a broader perspective on functional treatments, we can provide patients with more effective and personalized orthodontic care. This approach can lead to better patient outcomes, increased patient satisfaction, and improved overall oral health and aesthetics.
